Centuries converge at every square, every façade, along every avenue in the Kurpark. The Romans already knew of the warm sulphur springs and understood their power. What fascinates me about Baden is precisely this layering. The Biedermeier era rests upon Roman times, operetta upon courtly culture, the strolling flaneur upon the spa guest. After the great city fire of 1812, a new town emerged, elegant and stately, shaped by architects such as Josef Kornhäusel. This architecture still speaks today of who lived here, who wished to be seen here, and who wrote music here that changed the world.

A Town as a Stage

Baden was always more than a spa resort. It was a social stage on which the life of the monarchy played out in miniature. People met at the theatre, strolled through the Kurpark, and gathered at the casino. Beethoven stayed here on several occasions, Mozart was a guest, and Emperor Franz spent his summers in the town.
